Grietje Buttinger

1924—2017

We are very sorry to announce that Grietje Buttinger passed away on 27^th February, 2017 after a short illness. She was 92 years old and will be known to many in the UK and around the world for her willingness to give overnight accommodation to many travelling Esperantists in London.

Over the decades at least 4,000 were accommodated in this way for a very modest sum. In recognition of her work, the World Esperanto Association (UEA) awarded her its Diplomo pri Elstara Agado (Diploma for Outstanding Work) during the World Congress in Reykjavik in 2013.

The funeral will be held on 21^st March at Lambeth Crematorium, Blackshaw Road, Tooting, London SW17 0BY [corrected adddress] at 2pm, followed by a wake at The Leather Bottle, 538 Garratt Lane, Earlsfield, SW17 0NY.

Those wishing to attend are asked to contact Ilona Buttinger (ibuttinger@yahoo.co.uk) so she can monitor numbers. The family have requested that no flowers be offered but that donations in her memory be sent to the Esperanto Association of Britain.

Ni bedaŭras anonci, ke Grietje Buttinger forpasis la 27an de februaro 2017 post mallonga malsano en la aĝo de 92 jaroj. Ŝi precipe estis konata al esperantistoj en Britio kaj ĉirkaŭ la mondo pro sia preteco gastigi vojaĝantajn Esperantistojn en sia Londona domo.

Dum pluraj jardekoj almenaŭ 4.000 homoj tiel tranoktis ĉe ŝi kontraŭ tre modesta sumo. Rekonante ŝian laboron, la Universala Esperanto-Asocio premiigis ŝin per sia Diplomo pri Elstara Agado dum la Universala Kongreso en Rejkjaviko en 2013.

La funebra ceremonio okazos la 21an de marto ĉe Lambeth Crematorium, Blackshaw Road, Tooting, London SW17 0BY [korektita adreso] je 14:00, kiun sekvos kunveno ĉe The Leather Bottle, 538 Garratt Lane, Earlsfield, SW17 0NY.
