Directly speaking

Life-has been fairly hectic down on the farm the past month or two. No doubt it is reported elsewhere in Update that at long last the agreement with the City of Stoke-on- Trent (as proprietors of the College) was finally signed on 14 September. Construction work can now commence so that - assuming no earthquakes, floods or bankruptcies! - the new office and library should be ready in the Spring of next year. Meanwhile, our temporary arrangements at Barlaston have been developing apace. Also in early September, we appointed an Administrator to look after the office. Actually, it's a job-share arrangement involving Viv O'Dunne (who has been working for us, part-time, on a temporary basis for some months) and Lydia Arnold. Generally speaking, Viv will look after financial and general administration, while Lydia concentrates on membership administration, the databases and that kind of thing, but they will deliberately overlap so that each can cover for the other in the event of illness, holidays etc. I hope that the names Viv and Lydia will soon be very well known to you all and that we shall see a dramatic improvement in the general quality of administration and service. We have also been assisted on a volunteer basis by Ellen Rooney from Lincolnshire, particularly in the Book Service - thanks, Ellen.

Speaking of volunteers - I have inherited from Eric a file of offers from some of you to help out on a voluntary basis, which I have been working my way through over the months, if anyone else would like to join that list - or if you can't remember whether you volunteered last time! - drop me a line at Barlaston and we'll take it from there. There are no end of things to do, so almost any talent can be put to good use [Anyone good at building offices and libraries, for example?

With the move of the last of our chattels from Ipswich, the strain on the available space at Barlaston was extreme, but the handymen there (David and Geoff) - who have been towers of strength throughout - have rehabilitated a portacabin for us, which provides excellence storage space for books, stationery, old files and the like. Your Director of Development has been developing his puny frame humping boxes to and fro! The other development worth mentioning is the recent arrival of our new computer. Lydia is co-ordinating the arrangements for installation and data transfer; by the time you read this it should be up and running. The old computer has served us well but was becoming increasingly temperamental (like many of us) and on occasions presented quite serious problems to the office staff.

Meanwhile, I have been getting around just a little. Visits to the Eastern. Federation (in Braintree) and the South-Eastern (in Bromley) were combined with visits to the Berkshire Group and a meeting with the committee of ETA (i.e. Esperanto Teachers, not the other lot). In the next week or two I shall be taking in the North-Western Federation (Chester) and the East Midlands (Derby) as well as the Oxford Group and an International Year of Languages conference in Birmingham. Between times, I fit in meetings with luminaries such as Eric Walker, Joyce Bunting, Geoff King, Ian & Helen Fantom, Brian Burnett and Hilary Chapman, ManCom, and rather irregular attendance at the Glasgow and Edinburgh Groups. The Congress in Zagreb provided a convenient opportunity for updates with Paul Gubbins on La Brita Esperantisto and Terry Page on the forthcoming AGM/ Congress.

All this visiting and swapping of notes has got me thinking about organisation and communication and I'm beginning to wonder whether there might not be a bigger role for federations than in the past. Regular attendance at local clubs - not just in the Esperanto movement - is less common than in the past, hut people still want something more than the Internet and the occasional magazine through the letter-box. The answer may be occasional "regional" get-togethers for regular club-attenders, occasional attenders and non-attenders (who are often too far from a group); these have to be reasonably accessible - i.e. not just national events - which seems to suggest the federations as key players. I'll be developing these ideas and discussing with activists as I move around.

The next fixture in the EAB calendar is Ni Festivalu at Barlaston in January. As you know, we usually combine several activities in that weekend. This year I thought we might try and get together some of our key activists for a bit of mutual encouragement and swapping of notes;, also, perhaps, as many as possible of our postal tutors, for a similar kind of development exercise. Details will follow (he said, optimistically).

Finally, I should mention the Book Service and the revamped Second-hand Book Service (Do you think Librokanto - get it? - would be a good name for it?). Sales have continued steadily but we still have bigger stocks of some titles than we need, so ManCom has agreed to some heavy discounting. Watch this space and start saving! I think that's about as much space as Eric will allow me, so for now - Eku kaj disvastigu!

David Kelso - Director of Development

Letters to the Editor.

The present system of electing the management Committee of our Association is not sufficiently democratic. In many national membership organisations nowadays postal voting is the rule. Cannot we do the same?

Also, I think we would have a more stable system if people were elected for a three year period and one third of them retired each year. Can a resolution be put at the next A.G.M. to make these changes?

Rona Waters. Wakefield.

Dear Eric,

'Movement' and 'Community' refer to different sorts of activity. 'Movement' refers to promotion of the language, and 'Community' refers to participation in events using Esperanto, but not primarily concerned with its promotion. Most people are involved with both, though some are interested in Esperanto as a language in its own right, without regard to any future aspirations, and some are interested only in the promotional side, without themselves using the language abroad.

The Community does not need a strong leadership, or a central committee, or a parliament, since .each member of the Community wants to do his own thing, and be free to use Esperanto as he wishes. The Community side of Esperanto is going well, with events springing up all over the place. The Community is international, and doesn't need to be based on national associations.

The Movement, on the other hand, needs strong leadership, and a sense of focus. It needs to have national branches, since promotion work can be very different from country to country.

The Movement needs the Community, otherwise it would be in the same state as the movements for Ido, Volapuk, Novial, and all the rest. However, there is also a negative side: if the Movement degenerates into just a community, the same social instincts which belong to the Community take over in the promotional activities. The sense of focus goes, the leadership evaporates, the committees keep themselves fully occupied, giving everyone a voice, and following the procedures of democracy. If the final result does not reflect the general wishes of the members, then this is hardly democratic in practice.

The Landaj Asocioj need to redefine their role. They will no longer be required as one-stop shops for Esperanto in their respective countries. They will need to focus in on promotional activities, or they will whither away. There will be growing numbers of people who don't join their Landa Asocio, but do take part in the Community. The Landaj Asocioj will need to have something to offer in the promotion of the language if they are to survive.

In the World Congresses, there is often a notice on the door of the congress office, saying "Tiu ĉi ne estas generala babilejo" [This is not a general chat room]. I think a copy of that notice should be stuck on the desk in front of each committee member in each meeting of each Landa Asocio.

Regards, Ian Fantom

Estimata Redaktoro,

Sincere, David Withey, Liverpool.

Kara Eric,

La suno multe brilis kaj mi evitis ĝin sed June multe trasorbis ĝin (soaked it up!). Estis 70 partoprenantoj. Daŭru lerni kaj ĝuu Esperanton!

Edith Sheldrick Barnoldswick, Lancashire.

[EAB Update No. 15 page 3]

Kara Eric,

Estis mia unua Internacia Kunveno kaj mi timis iomete, ĉu mi povas kompreni? Ĉu iu ajn povas kompreni miri? Estis 152 partoprenantoj, plus 25 beboj kaj infanoj kaj inter la plenkreskantoj estis pli da dekduo adoleskantoj.

Kaj mi estis la sola Anglano! [Kial Angloj timas iri eksterlande? - Redaktoro]

Sed, vere, mi venis kiel fremdulo kaj foriris kiel bona amiko.

Ron Horn, Lancing, Sussex.

PS. During the week I met and talked to a young German mother and her 12 year old daughter. Both are English/ Esperanto proficient and offer to guest a couple in their home in Hamburg for a reciprocal arrangement in England. Anyone wishing to practise their German and/or Esperanto please contact Jutta Chikato, Bŭtehude, Germany [full address and phone number available from the Editor]

Something for free!

In moving our book stock from London to Ipswich, and then to Barlaston, it has become obvious that we are carrying more copies of some books than we really need. It has therefore been decided to *GIVE SOME AWAY* to local groups, so, any group of three or more Esperantists who meet together on a fairly regular basis, can have UP TO 10 COPIES of each of: English-Esperanto Dictionary, by Fulcher & Long and Esperanto: the International Language (textbook) by W J Downes.

These books (all new, by the way) are suitable for beginners' (and other) courses, for lending to serious enquirers or for donating to your local library. If you can believe that this isn't a hoax, just send details of your group, the number of copies you want, and £3 towards the cost of postage, to the EAB office at Barlaston. Honest, there's no catch!

From the Federations...

Once again I thoroughly enjoyed the 'studrondo' at Scottish Churches' House in Dunblane. Four of us who arrived on Friday evening dined and chatted for a time with a group on their way to Iona. I think they soon realised that we are equally as enthusiastic about Esperanto as they are about their visits to holy places.

The programme commenced on Saturday morning with Coffee and biscuits (there was no shortage of food and drink in Churches' House). The guest speaker David Thornell from Washington D.C. introduced his subject 'American Indians: the Myth and the Reality'. Later Hugh Reid presented his 'Translation Analysis' with extracts from 'Lord of the Rings'. David Bissets first-class slides of Tallin in March, were pure pleasure. With no effort on bur part, we enjoyed seeing pictures of the old town in golden sunshine. Afternoon tea on the Sunday sent us away with happy memories.

Muriel Shackleton.

Venu, tero amika, kaj englutu min ...

Come to Barlaston! August 10-16 2002!

J. Aldridge.

Amerika Humoro: Singardu pro viaj retadresoj

Imagu.

Imagu ilian hororon kiam ili trovis ŝin surplanke, morta!

Ili alrigardis la ŝaltitan komputorekranon kaj legis tiun retmesaĝon:-

EAB Free Postal Course Distribution

EAB operates an introductory Free Postal Course; its aim is to give people a chance to "try before you buy" with a low-cost introduction to the language, but it does promote our paid and advanced courses too. The first lesson is placed (always with permission) in libraries, schools, colleges, bookshops, etc; anywhere where people with a potential interest in learning Esperanto might see it. (But we don't go stuffing it, uninvited, through people's letter-boxes!).

If you distribute copies of this first lesson, do please check that you are using the current issue, which shows the office's Barlaston address at the foot of page 1 and as the contact address on page 4. You can additional request copies of this latest issue from the EAB office.

This charity exists to give grants to young people who have reached a good enough level in Esperanto to be able to converse reasonably well. Applicants can use grants to go from Britain to foreign countries and young people in other countries can apply for grants to help them to visit Britain. There are also some grants available to help British youngsters go to E. events in Britain itself. Please note the grants are only available to help youngsters go to genuine Esperanto events or to make genuine use of Pasporta Servo.

In the 12 months to April 5 2001, the Foundation received £9,280 and gave out £2540. These included helping 9 Russian children visit London and Hastings, a Brazilian woman go to the SATEB weekend and two people were sent to E. events in Germany, France and Italy. Encourage anyone under 26 years old to apply.

Grab the Chance!

Never miss the chance to push Esperanto. Someone who follows that rule is Paul Hewitt from Grimsby. Recently , Paul read, in the letters column of the Grimsby Evening Telegraph, the following. [they use robust language in the Humber area! - Ed]

Anyway, seeing the word 'Esperanto' immediately set our Paul's brain a'whirring and this was the result.

Subject; Letters to the Press

I was asked by Muriel Shackleton to reply to a letter in the Bradford Telegraph & Argus from her MEP about language learning. The reply appeared in a highlighted box on the letters page on July 20th. The text follows at the end of this message. Muriel tells me that she has now written a follow-on letter.

She has also recently taken part in a radio programme on the subject of communication on Bradford Community Broadcasting She says " Both presenters asked sensible questions and made intelligent comments - a change from the past. They were surprised to hear that we have a literature and that there are Esperanto pop groups!"

WE DESPERATELY NEED TO KNOW WHAT OUR PRESS PANEL IS DOING AND IF NECESSARY REACTIVATE IT.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Eric,

Regarding your 'Personally Speaking in the last issue, don't you think that a lot of fun was had when we were trying to do things perhaps a little beyond our capacity - organising congresses and holidays and social events, and doing things which, now we are older would no longer be fun, but hardship and discomfort. Let's hope that the younger folk are having as much fun as we did. Now I enjoy myself in a totally different and quieter way. My best Esperanto holiday, was with a group of no more than 50 people from about 10 different countries. I was the only one from England.

Helpopeto por funkciigi la projekton "Per-A-Por-E"

Saluton, karaj samideanoj!

Kio do estas "Per-A-Por-E"?

Kesto 1162, Changchun, CN-130021.

To EAB members and Supporters

I have mentioned that there exists two 'electronic conferences' or 'chat-rooms' in the Internet email system. One of them is called 'individuaj-membroj' and the other 'UM-membroj' (there are other discussion groups as well but these are the two which I view). As at middle of September there is a discussion going on about whether changes should be made to the 'UEA delegate system' and to the content of the UEA yearbook. Here is one contribution to the discussion from Humphrey Tonkins, former President of UEA and, when younger, very active in TEJO (the youth section). I thought you might find it of interest. Intermixed in Humphrey's letter are several points made by other people. These are indicated by the << symbol.

Eric Walker.

A planetary mnemonic

The Esperanto names of the planets, in their normal order from the sun, are: Merkuro, Venuso, Tero, Marso, (Astroidoj), Jupitero, Saturno, Urano, Neptuno, Plutono.

At this year's Barlaston summer school, Kay Sanders composed this helpful mnemonic:

Tatjana Auderskaja.

Kiel atendi

Guy BROWNING [GAJ BRAUNIN]

Ĉiutaga Esperanto: La romianoj nun alvenas anglan urbon

"Sed vi ne diris kion vi celis (driving at), dirante (when you said), ke la romianoj venos, ĉu ne? Ĉu temas pri italaj enmigrantoj (immigrants)?"

"Ne! Ĉu vi ne aŭdis pri la romianaj asocioj, kies membroj vestas sin en detale kopiita kiraso (armour), kaj portas lancon (spears - see note) kaj aliajn aĵojn? Ili ankaŭ prezentas grandajn batalilojn, ekzemple katapultojn kaj sieĝmaŝinojn."

"Ĉu ili siegos (lay siege to) vian urbon?"

"Nepre ne (certainly not / no way)!"

Bismarck". "Ho!" diris la pordisto, "envenu nur; vi trovos ĉi tien Napoleon kaj Shakespeare kaj Dante kaj ĉiujn eminentulojn de la mondo". Oni ne scias, kion Princo Bismarck respondis.
