The Speech of the Polish Ambassador at the Official Opening of Esperanto House, Wedgwood Memorial College, Barlaston, Staffordshire, on Tuesday 17th September 2002.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you for inviting the Polish Ambassador to today's official Opening of Esperanto House, the new headquarters of the Esperanto Association of Britain.
Esperanto - an international auxiliary language - is popular and there is a need in the world to cultivate, foster and improve it. Since 1887, when a Polish medical doctor, Ludvik Zamenhof, Esperanto's originator, first presented it, the language continues to flourish. It is said that a couple of million people speak it today, finding it a helpful neutral language, relatively easy to learn. Some enthusiasts for Esperanto use it even at home, with their children, as their native tongue. There are couples who have met each other through it and whose only common language has remained Esperanto.
Since it is so, there must be something irresistibly appealing about it. If it can serve as a politically and culturally neutral means of communication among those of different languages and cultural backgrounds, a tool for getting people together and finding common language, let's wish it to thrive further and do well.
As you may know, Poland is in the last stage of her negotiations to join the European Union, which we hope to finish by the end of this year. We hope to join the Union in a year and a half from now, i.e. 2004.
It is not only that a Pole was the originator of this language that we think it is extremely important to have a common language in Europe and in the world but also it is important to have such a language in order to understand each other better. Therefore, the more people will speak Esperanto, the better for us all.
The British Esperantists are in an exceptionally advantageous position: while speaking the globally-spread English, you are also using the most popular aŭiliary language. It makes you doubly lucky.
I wish the Esperanto Association of Britain every success in its new headquarters.

The World Esperanto President arrived in Barlaston yesterday for the opening of the new British HQ. Professor Renato Corsetti, who travelled from his home in Rome, was among a host of dignitaries at the event.
The British Esperanto Association has relocated to Wedgwood Memorial College from Holland Park, London, due to soaring rates in the capital.
Many local Esperantists, who were at the grand opening, believe the association has finally come home.
Paul Gubbins, who runs the Esperanto summer school at the college, said: "Esperanto has a lot of connections to Stoke so it is the perfect place to have the headquarters. Many renowned Esperantists have passed through the college since the summer schools began 40 years ago. Hopefully the new headquarters will encourage more to follow them." The international language, which was created by Polish doctor Ludoviko Zamenhof, has many links to Stoke-on-Trent, in particular the Green Star pub in Smallthorne. Built in the 1960s, the pub, whose name represents the symbol of the Esperanto language, was designed as a meeting place for Esperantists:
Mr Gubbins said: "There used to be green stars on the bar and notices telling people how to order in Esperanto, but all that's gone now. We don't meet there anymore but it used to be more or less to be exclusive to Esperantists". Yesterday a number of Esperanto enthusiasts gathered at the newly renovated coach house in the grounds of the college, to talk and praise the language, which has been spoken in Britain since the late 1800's. And after an entertaining speech - in Esperanto - by Professor Corsetti, Polish Ambassador Dr Komorowski, talked about the importance of the language. He said: "We believe that Esperantists should look to the future and the language should be allowed to develop and prosper". Councillor Ellis Bevan, Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, was then called upon to cut the green ribbon to officially open Esperanto House. The new headquarters includes a extensive Esperanto library and bedrooms for visiting Esperantists.

Phyllis Strapps was known very affectionately to us all in the Esperanto world as 'Strappo' and looking back now, it seems almost prophetic that she was born in the same year that the very first World Esperanto Congress was held - born under an Esperanto green star, we could say, because having learned in her early twenties, Esperanto was to become for her a life long passion that would span more than seventy years.
When Strappo was a fledgling teacher her headmistress took her to a teachers' gathering, where there was a talk on Esperanto and a series of lessons for those interested. Of all those who started the course Strappo was, maybe characteristically, the only one to finish - but she was hooked, and lost no time in putting her new knowledge to use, becoming a devoted and very active member of the Ilford Esperanto Group, which she revived and stimulated into action and supported down through the years. She arranged lessons and courses, socials, dances and outings, and welcomed anyone who wanted to take part into her Esperanto Home.
The more involved she became in the movement, the more enthusiastic she grew and the deeper the pleasure she gained from it. The passion developed into a way of life and Strappo combined tier two main activities into one and began to teach Esperanto at a succession of evening classes and groups for children; everyone and anyone was welcome.
And no one who knew Strappo can doubt that Esperanto was a pleasure for her. Many will have seen the unobtrusive sign in her window saying 'Esperanto parolata' - Esperanto spoken here, which gave a little clue to all that was within.
The correspondence abroad, the radio programmes in Esperanto, the books and the tapes and the spare bed always ready for the Esperanto guest. She was the proud holder of the diploma, awarded to her in 1938 - a considerable achievement reflecting a very high standard of language competence.
Strappo was one of the founder members of the Eastern Federation and only this year we celebrated our seventieth anniversary, and she - having been a member for those seventy years - desperately wanted to be with us but unable to do so, sent a recorded message full of encouraging words and hope for the future.
She had kept the Federation going throughout the war, almost single handedly when so many were called up on active service; she sent out bulletins from her home in Ilford, and took her knowledge and teaching expertise with her when she herself was evacuated with her class. Wherever she was, Esperanto was there also.
And that really sums up her way of thinking - she was always looking forward to see just what could be done and it is no surprise that in 1938 our Federation won a silver cup for being the most active and most dedicated and of course Strappo, as the then president, received the cup with pride; and we treasure it still.
She branched out still further and became a founder member of the Esperanto Teachers' Association and actively arranged weekend get-togethers that were social as well as educational. And so began a lifetime of teaching the language to adults and children, and still, in this last year, she was running a small conversation class at her home in Quilter Road.
In 1978 she took on the not inconsiderable task of helping to organise a British Congress, held here in Felixstowe, and, just as she had been in Ilford she was a stalwart member of the Felixstowe and Ipswich Groups. It is true that the more one puts into something the more one gets out of it and Strappo put in boundless energy and enthusiasm and derived from her Esperanto continual pleasure. She travelled abroad to world Congresses, proudly stood on the same platform as the daughter of the creator of Esperanto, and took part in a whole series of British Congresses. The more she became involved in the movement the more enthusiastic she grew. A life member of the universal Esperanto Association she embraced the philosophy and personified its ideals.
Many Esperantists would like to think that they have made their mark in the Esperanto world, and Strappo certainly has.
There are a million and one things that can be said about her and her involvement with the language, but it was maybe the little things that were the most important. She was the anchor for us as we struggled to teach our own children Esperanto as we ourselves were learning it; she invited our children to festive parties where they enjoyed specially tailored activities and wonderful teas. They roamed on the beach at her Chalet as a host of foreign Esperantists talked around them. They read her books, listened to her tapes, wrote letters and wove lavender - all in Esperanto. She watched with pride as we followed in her inimitable footsteps. She encouraged us to take part in our first British Congress and travelled with us to Oxford and back. Those things are the- things that stay forever. Never pushing, always encouraging, always ready, she was always there.
Strappo was a wonderful person and a very dear friend. She never missed an opportunity to promote Esperanto everywhere she went and with everyone she met. She generously gave her time and energy to help and encourage several generations of Esperantists

Voices from the Past
For many years I attended, as organist and as part of the congregation, the services of Spiritualists at Stansted Hall, close to Stansted Airport.
Sometimes, when the audience was mainly from a foreign country such as Holland or Germany, because the course that week is especially for those people, some of the contributions from spirit were given by the mediums in Dutch or German, or another language depending on the audience and recipient. But, so far, I have not heard anyone speak through a medium in Esperanto. Do other readers know of such communication taking place?
The conditions necessary for such communication may well be such that it is very difficult to obtain.
1 The dead person should have a good reason for speaking Esperanto;
2 the medium should be able to communicate in it;
3 the recipient of the message should be able to understand it.
Otherwise, the thought form of the dead person is often transmitted as a thought form only without language. The medium would then put that form into words of his or her choosing, and language depending on his or her ability, and the needs of the congregation.
So to find a message starting, being communicated and finishing in Esperanto is not likely to be easy. If we can show that Esperanto is used by some of our deceased friends, that would be an extra advertisement and we could find that Spiritualists would be interested in joining our movement.

I have now received the NET NEWS for the first time and I find it very interesting to read about "linguistic arrogance" in Britain and other facts about language strategies. I have the impression that there are still circumstances in your country, which Esperantists can fight against.
In Germany there is still much Latin taught in grammar schools. Often pupils who are gifted for mathematics like logical problems chose for Latin instead of French as a second language. With Latin it is for many people frustrating that they cannot use it in daily life. So there Esperanto would be a real alternative. It is logical like Latin and it can be learnt rapidly. I would find it narrow-minded, if British would say "We speak the world-language" and they would not want to learn any foreign languages at all, because then they miss the experience of getting in real contact with other cultures.
The ideas of Zamenhof and the .Esperanto-movement are a good means to fight against this attitude. In Germany all young people learn English at school, but often they do not use it any more, after they have left school. It is so important to keep the knowledge of languages alive and not forget them after the process of learning.
This is my discussion-part for this month. I will read your next NET-NEWS carefully and if it inspires me to any thoughts about Esperanto and languages in general, I will give you my reaction.

History of Esperanto in UK
Dear Sir,
I have an unusual request. My great-aunt, Edith Downes of Barry, Glamorgan, was involved in Esperanto in the UK before WWII. According to my family, she was perhaps secretary of the UK association or similar, and travelled to Europe in connection with her involvement with Esperanto. Do you have any records from this era which might help shed, some light on this family story or help me better understand her role. I have about a dozen books in Esperanto which belonged to her, and I would like to flesh out the story behind them if possible.

Yet another international romance thanks to Esperanto!

Sorry for the delay in replying. It's quite difficult for me to find time to reply to e-mails sometimes!
Yes, I have married a Russian Esperantist. Her name is Irina, and she currently lives in Ivanovo, about 200 miles east of Moscow. We met for the first time almost 3 years ago during the Internacia Festivalo, which in that year was held in Münster. This German end-of-year bash is about the best I have ever been to, and I would recommend it to all esperantists. There are usually over 200 people taking part (including children & families) from about 20 different countries.
I met up with Irina during the following Internacia Festivalo in Trier, and last year in Magdeburg. There were other holidays together, of course. The most memorable for me being in Berlin last November.
We married last July in her home town, Ivanovo. I shall be returning to Russia at the end of October when we will visit the British Embassy in Moscow together and start filling in what I know will be a mountain of forms, with the intention of getting her (and her 13-year-old son Denis) to come and live with me here in Birmingham. No doubt this will be a path strewn with obstacles, but we will do our best to be patient!

Unfortunately there has only been news from Bradford where I am happy to report that the group continues this winter with its regular meetings in the Bradford Central Library. They roughly twice a month. Visitors are always welcome.
The Annual Report says that in-the year to April 5th the income was £8,260.50 and grants to the value of £5,122.18 were made. This charity exists to help young British Esperantists to travel abroad and young people from foreign countries to come here. In all cases the travel must be in connection with Esperanto and the applicants must have attained a reasonable level of fluency. The full report is available from the secretary, Dr. Kathleen M. Hall, M.A. D.Phil.
Each year the University awards the prestigious John Buchanan Prize.
The candidates are required to present an original essay of at least 1,000 words in English and a translation passage of not less than 500 words into Esperanto.
The subject for the year 2003 is: Kial Esperanto estas ideala Unua Lingvo por Komencantoj.
Applications for details should be sent to the Registrar, The University of Liverpool, P.O. Box 147, Liverpool L69 3BX. The prize is £150. I shall be marking the papers, which must be in by 1st May 2003. The winner will be announced in the University's House journal.

As a new member or EAB in 1978,1 first heard of Reg Bedford as Editor of "Esperanto News", which was then our sister publication, mainly in English, to "La Brita Esperantisto".
At my first Congress in Harrogate, I discovered that he was a leading Christian Esperantist, but I did not realise then that he had been International President of KELI from 1975-1981, and during that time had organised a conference in Edinburgh and conducted worship in Esperanto in Stockholm Cathedral for a congregation of 800!
Reg was bom on Christmas Eve and died on Mayday. He became a draughtsman, surveyor and civil engineer, and during the war, though remaining a civilian, he was sent by the War Office to Singapore where he designed an arms depot. Later he worked for the Fleet Air Arm and then the British Oxygen Corporation. Though no-one seems quite sure, it seems likely that he learnt Esperanto during those post-war years with BOC in Essex.
He moved to Appleby-ln-Westmorland on retirement in 1974, and very soon became Town Clerk and fully involved in the life of the town and that of St. Lawrence's Church which he served as lay reader.
I moved to Cumbria in 1985 and became a near neighbour of Reg's two year's later. Reg was a leading member of the Morecambe Bay Esperanto Society and it was in working together on the Morecambe Congress that I really got to know him.
Travelling together each day to the congress, on the road at seven and not back till midnight each day, he was so easy to talk with that those journeys were a pleasure, not a trial.
I wish I'd known him longer, known him when he was younger; I'd like to have walked with him - he climbed all the "Wainright" summits (The Lakeland fells detailed by A. Wainright in his guide books) but kept modestly quiet about it, probably confiding in the two Siamese cats which were his home-sharers!
Only two years ago, at the age of 87, Reg again committed himself to the rigours of organising a national event, acting as secretary for "Esperanto 2000 in Appleby". He was a tower of strength, and though he did ask me (in the end) to lead the guided walk round the town, he provided me with the historical notes and local details, and it was he, of course, who lead the worship on Sunday afternoon at St. Lawrence's.
It was a mark of respect for him that the Mayor and Council agreed to name the road through our industrial estate "Esperanto Way"; it stands as a fitting tribute to a quiet, hard-working man, dedicated to the causes of Christianity and Esperanto.

The 48 hours spent at Barlaston for the official opening of Esperanto House, our new HQ. was very pleasant indeed. I had no tasks assigned to me and so was free to roam around, take in which lectures I wanted (which was most of them), film the actual opening and a few fragments of the talks, eat well, and generally have a good time. Others didn't have such a free and easy time and credit should be given to David and Jean Bisset, and Derek Tatton plus our own office staff Viv and Lydia, who worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went off smoothly, which it did as far as I could observe. There were quite a few 'eminentuloj' (bigwigs) from the academic and the Esperanto worlds. Several directors of other adult education colleges came to see this addition to the campus of Wedgwood Memorial College (WMC). This could be useful for the future if we hope to restore some weekend events at some of these other places of adult learning as there was a time when nearly half a dozen of them held Esperanto weekend events at least once a year
There must have been at least 80 people present for the opening and to hear speeches by the Lord Mayor of Stoke on Trent, the Polish Ambassador, and the chief education office for Staffordshire. Marjorie Boulton read a poem which she had written specially to mark the occasion (this will appear in the next La Brita Esperantisto). After the opening the distinguished visitors toured the new office and the new premises of the Butler Memorial Library, where Stephen Thompson declaimed a speech by Puck from 'A Midsummer's Night Dream'.
The party then visited the three bedrooms which are over the office and library are named in honour of Horace Barks (stalwart Esperantist and Lord Mayor of Stoke), William Auld and Marjorie Boulton. Afterwards, along with the rest of the visitors they enjoyed a splendid buffet laid on by the college staff. A tour was then made of the College Arboretum which is one of the finest in the country. Several of the trees have been dedicated to Esperantists who had devoted much of their lives to forwarding the cause of Esperanto in this country. Which brings me to remark on the great improvement to the ground around the Esperanto memorial which was sculpted many years ago between what is now our office and the main road. This is now a pleasant area to sit and muse or read a book etc.
During the time that I was there we had a talk by Helga and John Rapley about the Esperanto Centre where they live - 'Kvinpetalo'. This location in almost the centre of France sounds very much worth a visit. Ian Fantom, Grahame Leon-Smith, Paul Gubbins gave short talks, but the main lecture was by John Wells and was about one hundred years of Esperanto in Britain [see page 3]. Professor Wells showed many illustrations and it was a really fascinating talk. I have never heard anyone speak so well as John Wells. His speech delivery was so clear, and whilst he did not speak slowly, he did not race along in the way that many experts do. Every word was sharp and clear. His style was simple and not 'clever clever'. I regret that his talk was not recorded. Perhaps one day he can be persuaded to repeat it and that done. Renato Corsetti also gave a fine talk.
In the evening a splendid concert was given in the Parish Church by the Staffordshire Youth Medieval Music Ensemble. Apart from the leader all the players are from schools and colleges and much credit should be given to the local education authority for supporting this original venture. They wore colourful costumes from that era and their playing and singing was superb.
All in all, the whole official opening and the attached lectures and entertainments were at a high level and I'm sure that everyone went away much satisfied. Now we must get to work and build up again our levels of members and supporters.

I have taken over the role of co-ordinator of the Press Panel and would be grateful to receive names and addresses, including e-mail addresses, of those willing to write to local/national papers when the topic of Esperanto arises. I shall be working in close conjunction with Helen Fantom who is Publicity Officer on the management committee.
Of course no-one has to contact me before writing to a paper on his/her own behalf! A quick response is really useful so I'd like to encourage people to respond to items they see (and tell me afterwards, if you like!).
Having discussed the issue of Esperanto and the media with David Kelso and Helen Fantom I'd just like to add that wherever possible we should be upbeat and positive. Moaning doesn't achieve anything. It is always worth recommending the Internet as a source of information on Esperanto. If you have never used the Internet yourself your public library may well be able to provide you with free access and a demonstration, if you have your own Internet access and a bit of time to spare it is well worth accessing the Guardian website and typing Esperanto into the search engine as it will then helpfully refer you to every article that has mentioned it.

2. If we eat fiŝo we are eating a whole fish, such as a sardine. Otherwise we say fiŝaĵo. "We had salmon for lunch", would be "M lunĉis per salmaĵo "
3. Chow Mein is a Cantonese expression, and is found on the menus of European and American restaurants. It only means "fried noodles" and is served with a variety of ingredients, hence "chicken chow mein" etc.
4. Plena je is the older form. Many now say plena de.
5. The Forbidden City is called La Purpura Urbo by the Chinese because of the colour of the walls and the buildings, but in this case I think we should stick with Malpermesita, if we wish to be understood outside China.

The most famous Esperanto film is now available on video!
Angoroj (Running time 50 mins.) is-a story of a crime and punishment set in a town in the south of France. Duration just under an hour. It was the first feature to be made in Esperanto. Several 'eminentuloj' figure in the film which was made in their youth! The sound is sufficiently clear to be understood by all except beginners. Why not hire it to view at home, or, better still, show it at your club or federation meeting. Hire price is £6 which includes postage both ways. Cheque made out to Eric Walker with order please.
Balonfesto. ( Running time 19 mins) The spectacular sport of hot-air ballooning, experienced from the ground and the air, presented with an Esperanto commentary written and spoken by Malcolm Jones. EKo Publications started in 1996 and produces a range of Esperanto materials - mainly for learners. There is a promotional video/CD-ROM (with contributions by Paul Gubbins and Paul Hewitt), pronunciation tape/CD (with stories spoken by David Curtis and Ann Morse-Brown). Krucvortenigmoj (20 puzzles by Sue Ralph), Humuraĵoj (a compilation of stories translated or written by Bill Simcock), a course for beginners, etc. 'Balonfesto' is the first of what we hope will be a series of documentary films with Esperanto commentaries. We wish to show Esperanto being used in a practical way, dealing with non-Esperanto themes'. We also hope to develop more materials specifically geared towards teaching Esperanto, at different levels, but this is a more costly process and depends on our generating income from the sale of things like 'Balonfesto'.
