The Organisation of Esperanto Association of Britain (Esperanto-Asocio de Britio)

This page is about how the organisation and operation of the Association. From this page, you can also find links to news about Esperanto activities in Britain, to Esperanto-related events organised by the Association or by British Esperantists, details of a few of the people involved in the Association, and reports and guidelines prepared by or about the operation of the Association.

Inside the Association

The Esperanto Association of Britain (Esperanto-Asocio de Britio) is a registered charity (number 272676). Our objective is to advance education in and about the international language Esperanto, and to preserve and promote the culture and heritage of Esperanto for the educational benefit of the general public.

The charity is governed by a set of trustees, known as the Management Committee (ManCom), working within the rules and scope of its constitution, and applying the good practice and stewardship required of an Education Charity by the UK Charity Commission.

The charity is run on a day-to-day basis by its office staff, under the supervision of the trustees, and is supported by paid employees and unpaid volunteers.

For an overview of the Association's recent activities, see the most recent Trustees' Report.

Many people play a role in promoting Esperanto in the UK, and it is not possible to list them all. However, on the EAB People page we do list the trustees, staff, and those volunteers who co-ordinate some of the major functions.

The Association was formed as a registered charity in 1976, taking over from The British Esperanto Association (Inc). BEA was founded in 1904, and so in 2004 we celebrated the centenary of our national association.

Governance

The trustees are the members of the Management Committee of the Esperanto Association of Britain (Esperanto-Asocio de Britio), elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting to serve until the end of the next AGM. During the year, as workload and skill needs demand, the trustees may co-opt additional volunteers to serve on the committee until the next AGM, when these people will stand for election.

The current trustees are listed on the EAB People page.

The Management Committee appoints and supervises the paid officers of the Association (also listed on the EAB People page).

Subcommittees and individuals are appointed by the Management Committee to carry out specific tasks, requiring feedback to the Committee.

The association's constitution provides a guidance framework, within which EAB operates. New trustees also receive Trustees' Induction Presentation on appointment.

BEA Ltd

British Esperanto Association (Incorporated) (BEA) Ltd was the precursor organisation to the Esperanto Association of Britain (EAB); its company registration number is 93189 and its registered address is Esperanto House, Station Road, Barlaston, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, ST12 9DE. It is retained as a dormant limited company for technical reasons. The company has not been active since the transfer of its assets to EAB (stock and cash in 1995 and property in 1999). The bank account was closed in 2002, and then BEA was registered as dormant, as agreed by the directors on 20 April 2002. Its directors are typically appointed from the EAB Management Committee, and its members comprise the directors plus one life member who did not wish to transfer to EAB.

In May 2007, BEA Ltd was awarded a centenary certificate by Companies House.

Important distinction:
Esperanto Association of Britain (EAB) is the registered charity,
British Esperanto Association (BEA) Ltd is the dormant limited company.
The names and initials are very similar so it is easy to confuse the two.
