The bendoteko

I don't know if you know this word. A 'Bendo' is a ribbon or a tape and a 'teko' is a holder for documents, a briefcase etc. The word for a library of books is 'biblioteko' and so the word for a library of sound tapes, or cassettes, has become 'bendoteko'. However, I am not trying to give a lesson, but to draw your attention to the fact that our library of audio cassettes is very much underused. There are some marvellous tapes for hire. Some are of famous speakers from the past such as Dr. Zamenhof and Ivo Lapenna, some are of the much appreciated 'Everyday Esperanto' sketches and similar readings which are excellent for beginners. Some are of comical items such as 'The Accursed Parrot' and others are biographies of famous people. There are many interesting lectures by John Wells and others taken from Universalaj Kongresoj. All in all this is a collection worth using by our members. Altogether we have about 400 cassettes and a descriptive catalogue of some 80 or so of the best is available free of charge, just send to me a stamped addressed envelope and I will send it to you. Whilst writing about this Bendoteko, which rightly is the envy of many other Associations, may I pay tribute to some of the people who in the past have given generously of their time and talents without charge to make this collection available to us today.

Many of the recordings were made by Bill Walker and Ivor Hueting. The texts were written by Bill Auld, Marjorie Boulton, Don Lord and many others. Among those who gave their time to do the readings were Bill Auld, Conrad & Brenda Beaumont, Irene Bennett, Malcolm Jones, Albert Lindsay, Lawrence Mee, Andrzej Pettyn, Margaret Trethowen, Jack Warren and John Wells. I would also like to thank Will Green, whose idea it was to have a Bendoteko for the use of members of EAB and also Beatrice Clarke who carried out Will's idea. Finally tribute should be given to Peter Schilperoord, who about 50 years ago, when tape recorders became available for the first time, set out to make recordings which could be kept for posterity. I am sure there were many others whose names I have not mentioned. So, please make use of these entertaining and useful cassettes and send me your S.A.Es for a catalogue!

[Postscript: the Bendoteko catalogue is available on the EAB Website's library page]

Gibbons Stamp Monthly

In the February issue of this lavish magazine is a double page spread by Brian Cartwright which shows many Esperanto stamps which have been printed by the postal authorities in various countries, plus diverse cancellation stamps and postcards.

The following sounds the sort of thing I would have loved to take part in when younger. Perhaps it might interest some of our more able members.

Youth Ecological Expedition "Dnister plavni - 2002"

Duration - July 29 till August 11, 2002.

Location - Dnister river delta.

Basic camp of the expedition is situated on the river Dnister bank, in picturesque floodplain forest. Residence in tents (2-4 persons) Possibility to live in comfortable cottage is available (rooms for 2-3 persons)

All food is cooked on the fire, every member of the camp takes part in cooking for 2-3 times.

Drinking water- in artesian well.

In the work of the expedition the following will take part: leading specialists-ornithologists of the south of Ukraine, professors of biological faculty of Odessa National University, chief staff members of Odessa State Zoo. In the framework of the expedition Esperanto courses are foreseen for those who start to learn the language, as well as for the more advanced learners.

A seminar on the topic:" Esperanto and the ecological movement in Ukraine: past, present and future" will be held.

Our expedition gives possibility for not only pleasant recreation in natural surroundings, but also to explore during excursions untouched places of Dnister delta nature, to listen to lectures and enjoy practical lessons on ornithology, hydrobiology and botany. Nature explorers will share their experience about their work in different nature conditions and surroundings.

In free time - sport games and joyful quizzes, in the evenings - singing by the fire, intellectual games.

NoJEF

NoJEF would like it to be made clear that it is not empowered to finance young Britons to follow courses or attend meetings in Britain. That would mean amending the constitution. But NoJEF merely administers a small fund set up for that purpose by the late W.F. Edwards. None of NoJEF's funds go into that.

SATEB ( Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda en Britio)

On May 17-19, 2002 again will take place the annual weekend meeting of SATEB. These weekends, whether you are a member or not, are always most enjoyable. This year the main speaker is Jakvo Schram from Belgium but there are many other interesting items during the Friday to Sunday event. Don't forget that if you want to wind down and at the same time be well fed, you can usually book to come a day or so earlier and also to stay on afterward. But don't procrastinate! Book now direct to Wedgwood Memorial College

Esperanto in the Movies

Gattaca is a science fiction film, made in 1997, staring Ethan Hawke and Urna Thurman. Although all its dialogue is in English, the public address system in the Gattaca complex is bilingual, giving its announcements in Esperanto then English. At the start of the film we hear an Esperanto announcement welcoming visitors to the complex. Later on, there is an Esperanto announcement about mandatory testing for all employees.

Miskompreno

Letters to the Editor

Management Committee Nominations.
When, following the expiry of the announce deadline for nominations to the Management Committee, only four nominations had been received by the office, it became clear that there was a massive problem regarding the committee. I was concerned by the fact that it was difficult to find suitable candidates who would be willing to serve on what was generally viewed as a moribund committee. I was particularly concerned that the one member of the existing committee who had a high profile amongst the membership, and was particularly resourceful and businesslike in trying to further the aims of the association, had also fallen into this category.

There is little point in having democratic procedures without a democratic culture. The reluctance of Esperantists (except for a few mavericks) to oppose fellow Esperantists because of their ideas or unsuitability for particular positions, for fear of any opposition being taken personally, has led to an acceptance of the unacceptable. There is little point in having ballot papers to hand, if people vote with their feet. The committee was plainly in a downward spiral; tinkering with the flight path would not avoid eventual disaster. We needed a pilot and new crew members able to work as a team. The pilot had to be found first, and then others would come on board.

Grahame Leon-Smith has been out of the Esperanto movement for twenty years, but as a particularly dynamic president of BEA and EAB still has a high profile amongst much of the EAB membership. He also has a high profile in the education world. Understandably, he was reluctant to take over the controls at such short notice, but he did agree to being nominated as Vice President if Helen Fantom would accept nomination as President. Helen's strong point would be on-the-spot organisation, and Grahame would complement this with his experience in the education world. Helen accepted nomination on condition that Grahame would be spokesperson for education, and that Geoffrey Sutton would accept nomination as Honorary Secretary. Geoffrey accepted on condition that Helen and Grahame would be nominated as President and Vice President respectively. We all felt that Eric Walker should be invited to be nominated as a Vice President on account of his drive and high profile within the association. Eric accepted on learning that Grahame had accepted. With this, 1 hope that we have made a breakthrough to transform the Management Committee into an effective force, which together with the Director of Development, the Congress Organiser, and the editors of BE, NetNews, Update, and others, present or future, can bring about a reversal during 2002 in the association's fortunes.

Yours sincerely, Ian Fantom, FEAB.

Many thanks for all your letters (replies to the article in a previous issue). I will reply to all in the next few weeks. Many ask for my recipe for publicising Esperanto. It is this: Use every opportunity to keep Esperanto alive locally. Send any snippets to local newspapers-usual Manuscript rules- white typed A4 paper, double spacing. Most districts have a local daily paper, often an evening paper and usually a couple of free weeklies. All are looking for local copy.

The local radio station will usually include news of a local Esperanto meeting or Beginners' Course. Write to the News Room, Radio [station-name] . Send a copy to the Producer/ Presenter of the 'Morning Show' or whatever in may be called. You may be asked to turn up at some ungodly hour - about 6am for an interview. Most interviewers will start off "Isn't Esperanto a dying thing?," or "Nobody speaks it nowadays". Make a spirited riposte but have facts and figures ready with details of how it is used. It is all good publicity. Local societies: Rotary, Probus, W.I.s, OAP Clubs, are looking for speakers. Write offering to tell them about Esperanto. You may even get a fee or at least your travelling expenses.

Consider visiting some overseas Esperanto groups as your holiday. Addresses in the current UEA Yearbook or Pasporta Servo. Most local groups will arrange for you to give a talk and often arrange local hospitality. There was widespread press coverage when a German newspaper called me "An Esperanto Bum" saying I had "bummed" all over Europe obtaining hospitality from local E. groups. If you do arrange a talk overseas, send a biographical note to the organisers (in Esperanto) asking them to translate it into the local language and to send it to the local newspapers and radio stations. Take some slides or maps or publicity material from your local Tourist Information Centre. Anything to make an evening's programme. Songs or music on tape or CD. Tell them about your job and your community.

Frank hopes to be at the British Congress at Stoke on Trent this May, some come and discuss with him your local publicity!

EAB Election Procedures
There seem to be differing views on whether the officers of the association are to be elected by the members or by the Management Committee. The constitution does not make this explicit though as I remember it in the early days, it was the members. I've posted a copy of the EAB constitution on the EAB NetNews archive [Postscript: the constitution now has a link from the EAB Website's Organisation page, in the section "inside the association"] together with various other documents. The number of members to be elected to the Management Committee (minimum and maximum) seems to be dependent on the number of officers elected, so it would seem that the officers have to be elected first. It appears to me that a president elected by the committee is essentially a president of the committee, with the role of chairing the meetings. A president elected by the whole association is a president of the whole association, with a role of leadership and representation. For this reason, some of the nominations are directly for an office of the association. However, the words 'or as ordinary member' have been added to the nomination, in case the nominations for office are rejected by the chairman of the AGM, and therefore not voted upon.

Editorial

I think it is time to re-examine my role as editor of EAB-Update and also its function.

I started it in the winter of 1998 as 'an occasional newsletter from the Hon. Secretary'. At that time La Brita Esperantisto was starting to appear rather erratically and in any case, it was not carrying much news about the Association for its members.

Then with Bill Auld giving up the editorship of LBE which he had diligently done for nearly 30 years, Update increased in size and frequency. It also started to be a little bit more than just a newsletter with the inclusion of articles in 'beginners' Esperanto, a crossword and the welcomed return of Don Lord's series 'Everyday Esperanto'. Now, with the return of La Brita Esperanto under the gifted editorship of Paul Gubbins, and being entirely in Esperanto of, in general, a higher level than is in Update (I exempt from this the excellent translations which are prepared by Michael Cayley and Angus Wilkinson). We also have the excellent monthly electronic bulletin 'EAB-NetNews' which is produced by lan Fantom.

So we have a quite different situation from just over 3 years ago. Who 'owns' EAB-Update? Is it the Management Committee or is it the membership as a whole? This might at first sight seem a hair-splitting (Harfenda for those interested!) question but I think that it is important. It raises the question of to whom is the editor responsible and who appoints the editor. Nobody appointed me! I in effect appointed myself when, as Hon. Sec. I felt I needed to communicate directly with the membership (and I'm very pleased that the member-ship have quite often felt the need to communicate with me). It seems to me to be important that a means of communication should exist which can be used, not only for the ManCom to communicate with the members, and vice versa, but there should exist a means for members to communicate with each other and I see this as a valuable part of the motive for the existence of the paper.

Cassette and Newly Printed Text

'Imagu', a delightful collection of songs, translated by Bill Auld and sung by John Douglas, is once more available, including a clear text of the words and introduction. The ballads range from the John Lennon title song through to the heart touching Ĝis Halt' de Mia Kor' - a love song if ever there was one, by a fluid and timeless voice.

Tuj post vi decidas ke vi bezonas okulvitrojn vi devos elekti kiun formon. Dufokusaĵoj signifas ke vi ne povas legi ion pli alta ol via brusto aŭ ne povas vidi ion kiu venas pli malalte ol via brusto. Ili estas koŝmaro por malaltuloj kiuj strebas legi horaron ĉe aŭtobushaltejo kaj serĉante aŭtobuson grimpante deklivon. Tiel nomataj 'Varifokaloj' signifas ke vi povas fokusi sur iu ajn kondiĉe ke via kapo konstante moviĝas.

The Publication Policy of E.A.B.

During the period when La Brita Esperantisto had ceased to appear, we decided to temporarily take out a mass subscription to La Ondo de Esperanto for all of our Members (not Supporters). Since that time we have had a little debate in the columns of Update on what our future publication policy should be. The following are summaries of the unsolicited comments received during the time that this issue was being discussed in Update which is about a year ago. Most were letters which I published.

Comments:

Comments received after the first issue of the new L.B.E. came out in January 2002.

Further comments are invited, not necessarily for publication but to help the Management Committee decide on future policy. But remember that we cannot increase the amount spent on any one publication without cutting down the frequency of the other two.

Anglaj Prepozicioj en Esperanto. J.W.Prent

Iliaj gefiloj, Arturo Prent kaj Helen Fantom ankoraŭ aktivas.

"About"

PRI: I found them talking about the football results.

ĈIRKAŬ: She measures 80 cm. about the waist. [Ŝi mezuriĝas 80 cm. ĉirkaŭ la talio.]

EN: You'll find it somewhere about the room. Vi trovos ĝin ie en la ĉambro.

ALIMANIERE: He lives about the third house down the road.
He'll be there about six. Li estos tie ĉirkaŭ la sesan. ('ĉirkaŭ' anstataŭas 'proksimume', do estas adverbe uzata.)
There was a fair sprinkling of daisies about the field.
He is about your size. Li estas proksimume tiel alta kiel vi.
He is a man about town. Li estas nenionfaranto.
I have about enough apples. Mi havas preskaŭ sufiĉe da pomoj.

Promoting Esperanto

From Paul Hewitt

Just found some excellent material which all Esperantists (including the trustees!) should read - it may be worth considering for publication or even just mentioning it.

Kiel varbi por Esperanto. http://www.idiom.com/~ĉarti/esperanto/verkoj/

Another interesting site is that of the young French couple who are travelling throughout Europe in a caravan with their young family - http://www.creaweb.fr/a.reto/gudfronto.html

I am desperate to find one or two people who are prepared to translate/summarise articles from a variety of sources on trade union affairs for LabourStart. They need to have access to email and be prepared to give about 30 minutes a week. This is a real opportunity to use Esperanto for a practical purpose. More info from me. Paul Hewitt.

Statements by candidates for the Management Committee (Trustees)

(The validity of all the nominations has not been verified at the time of going to press)

From David Bisset. Proposed by Stanley Nisbet, seconded by John Casey
I am Vice president of EAB, Chair of the Publicity and Library Committees and Web Site Editor. I have been a UEA Delegate for many years; and am also the Hon. Secretary, of the Scottish Esperanto Association. I have been much involved in the whole Wedgwood Project; and am anxious to ensure that the numerous possibilities resulting from our relocation are fully exploited, especially our new relationship with adult education, I am fully committed to the renaissance of the Butler Library. The Director of Development will soon be able to devote more time to development, which is his primary remit. Development is closely related with the role of the Publicity Committee; and I envisage a considerable increase in proactive and reactive activities. Many of these activities will have an IT dimension; and further utilisation of the Internet and emerging technologies offer us unique possibilities. There is also an opportunity to extend our educational initiatives by exploiting new technologies. I regard the Esperanto world as both a community and a movement; and am convinced that progress depends upon analysis and planning; but also feel that a relaxed professionalism is what we require - with the ability to respond cogently to an ever-changing world.

From Joyce Bunting. Proposed by Arthur Prent, seconded by Greta Gertner
Relevant Work experience: Production Planning clerk (Kodak), Senior Personnel clerk (Kodak), Stock Control clerk (Murphy Chemicals), Shop and Dispensing Assistant (independent pharmacy). Bookkeeper (journalist), Higher Clerical Officer - costing clerk, service agreements and building contracts, energy management - computerised and manual - archives (Estates Department NHS) .
Esperanto: started to learn in 1986. Appointed Director of BEA (Inc.) Ltd. 1991, ManCom 1996, Hon. Treasurer 1997. Vision: to see Esperanto Office and Information Centre, book shop and library established and thriving in Barlaston. To see publicity and education promoted in a professional manner. To see Esperanto treated seriously by the media and educational establishments. To feel that membership backs the Management Committee in word and deed.

From Edmund Grimley Evans. Proposed by Bill Walker, seconded by Joyce Bunting
I have been involved with Esperanto since the mid 1980s, and on the Management Committee of EAB since 1997. My other Esperanto activities include translating, interpreting, editing for Monato and contributing to the new edition of PIV. Now that the construction of Esperanto House has begun in Barlaston, and there is a timetable for its completion, I consider that the most important task for the committee of EAB is to establish efficient procedures for the core activities of the organisation: responding to enquirers with attractive material, membership administration, publications, book service, and the Butler Library. Membership and publicity campaigns can be built on that foundation.

Helen Fantom. Proposed by Geoffrey Sutton, seconded by Brian Moon.
Joining the EAB committee is a last minute suggestion, but well timed. Six months ago I had family commitments that precluded taking on extra responsibilities. These have changed, and when Grahame Leon Smith at a reunion on 16th March said that he would become active again if I would found that Geoffrey Sutton was also willing to stand. Three extra members can help a lot more than one. Grahame is an expert on education, Geoffrey is happy to do secretarial work, and I have strengths in organisation of projects, plus experience as a trust accountant and primary supply teacher. I have always been active in my local club. I was in the Congress Committee for the Universalaj Kongresoj London (1971) and Brighton(1989), president of the London Club, on the committee of BEA/EAB before Gavan Rolf and Petra came along and, later, I did the on-site programme organisation for several International Children's Weeks that parallel the EAB needs to build on the achievements of the current committee in moving the office and hiring David Kelso. I hope to help with this.

Graham Blakey. Proposed by Joyce Bunting, seconded by Peter Danning.
I learned Esperanto over 40 years ago whilst at school, I have been both secretary and president of the Manchester Esperanto Society, have travelled widely using Pasporta Servo. I am a UEA fakdelegito for antikvajoj. My hope is that the educational authorities will come to realise that Esperanto, as well as being in its own right a useful tool for travel and meeting other cultures, is a better way of teaching children that they do have the capacity to learn a different language instead of making them struggle to learn French etc where so many of them fail.

Grahame Leon-Smith. Proposed by Brian Moon, seconded by Geoffrey Sutton.
He learned Esperanto under the guidance of Humphrey Tonkin at Cambridge University whilst reading German and French. He joined the British Esperanto Association in the 1960s and was elected to the Council and subsequently became Vice-President and President in the 1970s. He also served as a Committee Member of the Universal Esperanto Association and as President and subsequently Honorary President of the Esperanto Teachers Association. As President he became convinced of the need to obtain charitable status, and founded the Esperanto Association of Britain to co-ordinate all the charitable activities, leaving" BEA to administer the commercial activities.
He taught Esperanto at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, at the Sir Frederic Osborn School, Welwyn Garden City, and introduced a CSE in Esperanto at Townmead Comprehensive School, Hillingdon, where he was Headmaster. He campaigned continuously with Allan Nutton for a GCSE in Esperanto and when this was finally established by the NEAB he was appointed GCSE Moderator and worked with Allan Nutton as Chief Examiner for many years. In the 1980s and early 1990s he became increasingly interested in computers and the way in which they can enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Since 1992 he has worked as an independent Education Consultant for a number of companies helping schools to gain access to the Internet and to use it as an educational resource and a means of developing collaborative learning. He launched the Tele-School Project to create "The School of the Future" at the University of Surrey in 1993, the first free Education Portal called "Tele-School Online1' in 1995, and the flat-rate Internet Tariff for Schools in 1996. In 1998 he launched the registered charity "Free Computers for Education", which collects computers which are no longer needed by industry, has them professionally refurbished, and then given free of charge to schools in need in the UK and throughout the world.
He believes that if Esperanto is to be successful in the Information Society of the 21st century it must embrace the new technologies, and create an online community of Esperantists throughout the world who will use email and the Internet to promote and teach the International Language all over the world.

Frank Spilsbury Proposed by Elisabeth Michel, seconded by Will Green
After an earlier, unsuccessful contact with Esperanto, I met with the enthusiasm of Les Hartridge. It was then that I completed the 'Free Postal Course' and became involved with the South East Federation, the London Club, and the Wedgwood Summer Schools. Visits to British Congresses were encouraging. Though only lately did I feel supported so I can make full use of Esperanto. In addition, I now seek to assist everyone presently involved with Esperanto. I have been in touch with the southern federations to provide contact and support. The reorganisation needed after the sale of 140 Holland Park Avenue, is something 1 fully support and will do all in my power to see it is successful. To extend the influence of Esperanto we need to convince all of our present and future contacts that E.A.B. is both enthusiastic and efficient. These contacts, especially those in" science, construction and commerce must be shown the economic and financial advantages to be realised by using Esperanto for the speedy and error free transmission of intelligence between themselves and their foreign contacts, I look forward to your support.

Geoffrey Sutton. Proposed by Grahame Leon-Smith, seconded by Ian Fantom
Li duan fojon oficis ĉe UEA de 1983 ĝis 1986 unue kiel libroprojektisto (i.a.

Bill Walker. Proposed by Joyce Bunting, seconded by Norah Brown

Eric Walker. Proposed by Ian Fantom, seconded by Grahame Leon-Smith
This past year has yet again been marked by falling membership (I believe in facing unpleasant facts honestly). However, the desks are now about clear for action and with the Management Committee working hand in hand with the Director of Development, giving guidance to the Publicity sub-committee, we should soon get out some promotional material, start to issue press releases and do whatever else is necessary to get EAB moving positively again. I founded an educational charity some forty years ago and am currently a trustee of two Quaker charities and consider that I have some business experience to offer. My personal opinion is that Esperanto is excellent for widening one's horizons, making new friends from different cultures and altogether enriching one's life. This has certainly happened in my case. Esperanto has helped me "to reach the corners that other languages don't!".

[EAB Update No.17 Page 9]

If you are an EAB member with voting rights (i.e. have paid the £25 or £20 subscription, or are a life member) and you unable to attend the AGM in person, you can appoint another 'member with voting rights as your proxy, by giving at least 14 days' notice to the EAB office, naming the person who will serve as your proxy. If you wish, you may nominate the chairman of the meeting (himself a full member) to serve as your proxy; if you do this you must give a clear direction on how you want him to cast your vote. You will receive a proxy form as part of the A.G.M. agenda.

I heard of an interesting Internet web site which will automatically translate from English into Esperanto or vice versa! I tried it with a simple sentence "My name is Eric Walker and I live in a small town with the name of Ipswich". It translated it absolutely correctly with the exception that instead of "vivas" it wrote "viv". If you want to try it out, log on to http://traduku.net

Message to those who want to go more deeply into the use of Internet with Esperanto! Log on to the EAB-Netnews web site [now] at http://www.esperanto.org.uk/eab/eab_netnews.htm and here you will from time to time find interesting items put on by Ian Fantom.

Balta Esperanto Forumo. July 14-18 2002

The editors of 'La Ondo de Esperanto', who have just moved from Ekaterinburg to Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave at the Baltic sea between Poland and Lithuania, are organising this holiday. A full printout of the text of a long description of it is available by email from Eric Walker or, if you send an s.a.e., he will post a copy to you. A brief summary shows that there will be a good cultural programme (discussion of Varankin who wrote 'Metropoliteno' - about Eugene Onegin - seminar about literature criticism etc) plus a good social life and tours in the locality. Total cost for 5 days is about £75 plus meals (which are cheap).

Help!?

One of the great strengths of the Esperanto community has always been the phenomenal contribution by individual members of time and effort to do the 1001 things necessary in a movement such as ours. 140 Holland Park Avenue was run as much by volunteers as by staff and, of course, local groups and federations are run entirely by their members - not to mention all the fakorganizoj and publications in which our community abounds.

One snag about Barlaston - almost the only one, in fact - is that there are fewer members and supporters within easy reach than in London. Nevertheless, there are lots of things that need doing that can be done elsewhere, with support from the office. Paul Gubbins and Simon Davies produce La Brita Esperantisto; Arnold Pitt, and Rosalind Walter look after courses and examinations; Kate Hall and others look after liaison with Africa (not to mention the Norwich Jubilee foundation which is, of course, independent); Geoffrey King, our Honorary Librarian, directs library and archive policy from deepest Suffolk; Terry Page coordinates arrangements for the AGM/Congress; Ian Fantom edits NetNews (the electronic newsletter) and Eric Walker this illustrious publication (Update); Paul Hewitt co-ordinates the Book Service, while Ellen Rooney helps with processing orders; Joyce Bunting does a mountain of work on the financial side; Geoff Sutton looks after UEA subs and related matters, while Roy Simmons, Angela Tellier and Malcolm Jones do a power of work in ETA, with whom of course EAB has a good, collaborative relationship; everyone on ManCom has a specified responsibility; and more than 30 members help out as tutors on our several correspondence courses. And none of them lives in Staffordshire!

We already have the names of 20 or so members and supporters prepared to contribute as volunteers - in publicity, translation, media work, occasional hospitality, historical/ research enquiries, tutorial work and the various other areas mentioned above. But we can always use more help, especially as - ahem! - some of us feel the need to cut back a bit on our commitments.

So - yes, you're way ahead of me! - if you would like to be more involved in some aspect of our work at national level, just drop me a note - e-mail or hand-made - at Barlaston and we'll send you a simple pro-forma for the file. Please, don't think you have nothing to offer! - we can use just a few hours a month, and there is almost no talent that we can't use, so if you would like to contribute, even if you're unsure how, let me know - and I'll think of something!

PS - when necessary, we can make accommodation available at Barlaston - and the cooking is superb!

David Kelso, Director of Delegation!

Mi kompatas tiujn, kiuj (the ones who) aĉetis domojn dum la bela vetero."

"Kompreneble (of course). Sed kiam mankas sufiĉe da mono en la kaso, ili amas nur flikaĉi (patch things up) per neadekvataj rimedoj (measures), esperante, ke la posta inundo ne estos tiel severa."

"Kaj sendube ĉiu kulpigas ĉiun krom si."

"Certe! Alie ili devus multon elspezi, levante (by raising) aŭ la lokajn impostojn (council taxes) aŭ la premiumojn (insurance premiums), depende de kiu ŝuldas."

"Kia malgaja temo (gloomy subject)"

"Do ni parolu pri io pli gaja.

Esperanto experiences

An interesting letter to Ian MacDowall shows the value of Esperanto in travelling from country to country.

Kara Ian

Krome li vizitis Berlin kaj Potsdam kie li prelegis en loka teknika universitato kaj loĝis ĉe kaj loĝis ĉe samideanoj dum kelkaj tagoj (dankon Martin kaj Alex).

Amike viaj, Marcos, Tatiana, Paula kaj Carla, Casilla 979, Valdivia, Ĉhile.

Pozitiva kaj Inspira

Ian Fantom

The final words
