Chanticleer / Chante-claire

Chanticleer

Hail to thee, herald of morning, too early, too early, you're crowing.
No glimmer of light in the sky yet, no glimpses of radiance glowing.
Deep-drowned in the smugness of dreaming, at rest and at peace is the village,
While darkness besprinkles with dewdrops the surface of meadow and tillage.

We two, the unsleeping companions, are sentinels willing and able:
You crow – and I scribble my verses expressing my heart and its fable,
Yet probably nobody hears you, and probably no one will mention
The truth to be found in my poems, nor pay them the slightest attention…

So what! To the sun give a welcome, you herald of imminent dawning,
To birth of a new day, still hidden below the horizon's dark awning;
For me, too, the task is to welcome a new dawn, a new day's arrival,
Concealed in the soul of the people, of flux and reflux a survival.

So sound the alarm, golden cockerel… as the vigil of night-time is ending,
Let poet and cockerel blazon the approach of morning impending!
Wake up, all you who have hearts, and whose ears are ready to harken:
Take heed of two sentinels' voices the coming of daylight remarking!

Tradukis William Auld

Chante-claire

Saluton, heroldo matena, tro frue, tro frue vi krias,
Ankoraŭ forestas la lumo, eĉ unu radio ne strias;

Alarmu do, gaŭlo orpluma …
