A married couple
He sold himself for legs, a pair
of suspenders on a nylon stocking,
two pointed breasts, her shining hair:
and quickly found them sadly lacking.For her part, she permitted kisses
to get a man, a home's security,
the right to be addressed as 'Mrs':
the game of sex remained impurity.A family with a single child
they drifted in a kind of way,
to frequent silence reconciled:
there really wasn't much to say.She died at the age of sixty-two
after anonymous existence.
He grew aware of déjà vu
and lack of motive for persistence.And then with son-in-law and daughter
a lodging he was glad to find —
an old folks' home would be much fraughter
(they neither grumbled nor were kind).And while his blood grows thin and weak,
when he's depressed and solitary
a teardrop trickles down his cheek
and in his heart he whispers: 'Mary!'
