Our friend Bill Chapman, an Esperantist since the age of 16, sadly passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 21 2020. Bill had been battling cancer, with his usual cheer and optimism, over the past year. Unfortunately, despite steps to isolate him, Bill contracted Covid-19 and was taken to hospital, where he left us, although not before telling the nursing staff all about Esperanto, true to form! It isn't possible to do justice to Bill in a notification like this one. Rest assured that there will be more about Bill in the next issue of La Brita Esperantisto. Much as many of us would dearly like to salute Bill, I'm afraid that lockdown restrictions limiting public gatherings and entry into Wales mean that it is very unlikely that we will have the opportunity to. If the situation changes, I will post an update. Bill's family have nominated two charities which meant something to Bill, should anybody wish to make a donation in his memory. They are: Citizens Advice Bangor, which offers free, independent and confidential advice that helps people with legal and financial worries, and of which Bill was a trustee; Awyr Las Gogledd Cymru - Blue Sky North Wales, an NHS Charity that supports the specific hospital wards, departments or community healthcare services which the NHS in North Wales cannot provide. Nia amiko Bill Chapman, kiu esperantistiĝis nur 16-jara, bedaŭrinde forpasis pace ĵaudon la 21-an de majo 2020. Dum unu jaro li bataladis kanceron, kun siaj kutimaj gajeco kaj optimismemo.

We have just booked the venue for the 2022 Brita Kongreso, the first to be held since 2019's in Dover. It will take place from Conwy Business Centre at Llandudno Junction, LL31 9XX from April 22 to April 24 2022. At this stage, we haven't made any plans. We anticipate having an excursion day on the Monday, and a fairly full programme: there are five rooms in the venue, and we've booked the whole place out. We'll add details as and when plans take shape on britakongreso.org. For now, keep those dates free in your diaries! Did you know that Amazon runs a system by which it will transfer a small percentage of the price of eligible products to a charity of your choice? That scheme is called Amazon Smile, and EAB is one of the charity's you can select. To make use of the service, be sure to use the Amazon Smile site rather than the standard Amazon one: smile.amazon.co.uk Everything about the site is the same as the normal one except the name. Once you're there and are logged in, you will be asked to select your charity. We're easy enough to track down: And then you shop as normal. That's all you have to do: the rest is automatic. Hovering on the AmazonSmile item in your user bar will show you which charity you've nominated, and what you've raised so far. It's also available within the app! So it's really straightforward. The only challenge is remembering to shop at Amazon Smile instead of the usual location. You just have to get used to typing 'sm' and letting your browser remember the rest!

Edit from 26/04/2021: The event has been cancelled because of the pandemic. We're very happy to share the information that the Universala Kongreso de Esperanto will be coming to our country in 2021! The venue will be Queen’s University, Belfast with the UK running from July 17 to 24! We're two years (and two UKs) away from the event so there isn't currently anything else to report. Keep the date free in your diaries and stay tuned for more!

There are no two ways around it; if you're going to learn Esperanto, you're going to need a dictionary. But where do you find them? Which ones are the best? Are there paper ones? Online? We've added a page to our Resources section which answers all those questions and more, plus provides links to recommended dictionaries. We hope you find it useful!

The courses Jen Nia Mondo 1 & 2 were published in the 1970s and remain fairly popular even now. Accompanying the courses were recordings of fluent speakers. Those recordings are hard to come by so EAB is making them, fifty tracks in total, freely downloadable.

You wait for a launch and then two come at once! It's not only EAB's new site which has taken off this week. Over sixty years after the publication of the revered Teach Yourself Esperanto, its successor for the modern day, Complete Esperanto, has appeared on bookshelves on the High Street. The new book also happens to reside on the bookshelves in Barlaston, and to celebrate the release of a mainstream text book by a renowned publisher, EAB is offering it at a very special price of £20. That's half the recommended retail price. We don't know how long we're going to keep the price this low, so make sure to get your copy now from our brand new online bookshop!

We're delighted to announce that EAB has revised and republished Mil Unuaj Vortoj en Esperanto (First Thousand Words in Esperanto), and it is available in our shop for only £5! This new version replaces some older vocabulary items (eg audio cassette, video) with newer ones, the appearance of computers and televisions has modernised, and some of the translations have changed from those used in earlier versions. We chose a clear, distinctive font which is reminiscent of a child's handwriting and calculated to be easy for young children to read. If you've got the second version (with the red cover), then you will immediately recognise the cover design; we chose to honour the previous version rather than simply translating the text on the very different English cover. At only five pounds, a steep discount from the retail price of £8, the book is a bargain for children and adult learners alike!

We're delighted to announce that our latest publishing project is Spaco sur la balail', a translation by Ian Carter of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's Room on the Broom into Esperanto! We had hoped to launch the book at our conference in April. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has led to our cancelling the conference and to delays in the book reaching us. We can't currently be sure of the exact delivery date but we fulfill our pre-orders as soon as we take receipt of the stock. The book costs only £5. If you're from the UK, please note that you can include another 1.8kg of books in the package before the postage bracket rises (currently £3.10 for up to 2kg), so you might wish to take advantage by ordering some more books, which we'll despatch alongside it. Our Twitter account shows several books which are new in stock 🙂

Following suggestions received from members over the course of several years, the trustees of EAB applied to the Charity Commission to revise the charitable object of EAB. The Charity Commission has approved the new wording and so the object of EAB reads now 'To advance education in and about the international language Esperanto and to preserve and promote the culture and heritage of Esperanto for the educational benefit of the general public.' The original wording didn't have any wording which indicated responsibility for cultural heritage, the over 100 years of Esperanto literature held in the Butler Library, which members and the trustees believe is incumbent on EAB to protect. The new wording removes some superfluous wording which didn't obviously relate to measurable charitable activity. After considerable research and internal discussion, the trustees presented the revised wording in the AGM of 2017, after which followed a period of consultation with members for one year. Articles inviting feedback from members were published in Update 78 and 79 and the revised wording was subjected to AGM approval in 2018. Of the 53 votes submitted, 43 were FOR, 8 AGAINST and 2 ABSTAINED. The trustees subsequently submitted the proposed wording to the Charity Commission, who have approved and therefore officialised it with immediate effect.

After an extensive period of development, the Esperanto Association of Britain is launching a new online home today. The site that you're currently seeing is not the finished version but we feel is stable enough now for EAB members to enjoy and assist with developing by offering their comments and suggestions and reporting bugs where they see them. Feel free to make use of the discussion areas, join one of our social groups, make purchases from our shop, contribute articles, read up on our classroom courses and see what we offer as distance learning, as well as finding out how to find other Esperanto speakers. And if you're new to the Esperanto Association of Britain, we invite you to read about who we are and what we do. Most of the content is currently in English. That will change in the future when the site stabilises and new features, currently under development, appear. We invite you to check back regularly as the site continues to take shape and hope you'll enjoy using it. We would like to pay tribute to Bill Walker, who administrated the previous site from its creation in 2005 until its retirement today. Bill himself refers to simply stepping in back then as a stop-gap and not at all expecting to still be here running substantially the same site so many years later. We are delighted that Bill has offered to continue supporting EAB with this new site and will be part of the team going forward.
