"Red roads of Auroville" in Esperanto. Written by Paweł Kowalczyk. Translated by Ewa Grochowska from the Polish.
Since 2010 Paweł Kowalczyk has explored India, travelling, observing, discussing, reading... there he also met his wife, Sujatha.
What is Auroville ("City of Dawn")? Is it an experimental eco-village in exotic surroundings? Is it an alternative to the future reality? Is it a utopian project, surviving thanks to state help and private donations? Is it perhaps a unique place of freedom and at the same time a source of inspiration for those who seek alternatives to the current domination of Big Capital and globalisation ?
In 2010, Paweł Kowalczyk stayed for six months in Auroville as a volunteer, and returned there during his subsequent visits to India. By recounting his experiences and adventures he allows us to discover this unique place, to get to know its inhabitants and volunteers. He presents the operation of this commune, its history and its deep isolation. He shows us many bottom-up initiatives by big-hearted people, who dedicate their talents and savings to "The Idea".
The author also describes the challenges of every-day life for the inhabitants of the Bharat state of Tamil Nadu (the nearest neighbours of Auroville) and their economic and social situations. These descriptions are enriched with personal considerations and interesting details about history, culture and beliefs. He tells of the struggle with bio-piracy and Big Capital, and explains (among other things) how Barat's rural poor have fallen into a spiral of debt and how the local cow is no longer sacred.
Publisher: Espero, Slovakia. Year: 2021. 290 pages. Colour-illustrated. ISBN: 9788099902313.
